Claude Le Sauteur: A tale of two giants
They called him the Giant of Charlevoix. Not because of his physical deeds or his size, but because of the place he earned amongst the artists of his generation.
Claude Le Sauteur passed away in the fall of 2007, while the Charlevoix museum was holding a major exhibit of his landmark pieces of art. His paintings are highly rated and they attract great interest from arts fans and collectors. The man had explored beauty, color and aestheticism in different ways and means before finding his own. And that he did brilliantly with his first exhibit back in 1976.
History, amongst other things, had always fascinated Claude Le Sauteur, « more specifically the cultural roots of the Quebecers ». So it did not come as a surprise that his last ever creation was the impressive and powerful painting of Louis Cyr, a piece of very large format, a reminder of the dominant figure the strength hero was and still is in the eyes and minds of his people.
When Le Sauteur and writer Paul Ohl met on August 5, 2007, he wrote these words: « It is your biography of Louis Cyr that inspired that portrait »
