JESSEN PAULIN : MAN OF STONE
He has size, strength, composure and class. When it comes down to the stone lifting event, the best in the field stop to watch him tackle the 5 th stone. More than once, and against the strongest in the trade, he put up that last stone as others struggled. It happened in 2002, at the World Strongest Man contest in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He won the stone event. He did it again in the WSM 2003 finale in Zambia, in a head-to-head battle with the great Magnus Samuelsson. And at the World Muscle Power, in Dolbeau/Mistassini, Quebec, Canada in 2004. Finally at the Mohegan Sun Super Series in 2005, as that performance led him to a second place win, next to Mariusz Pudzianowski. To sum it up, he his Canada's best ever stone lifter.
He is Jessen Paulin, the pride of Abitibi, this huge, timberland of the province of Quebec. When he will simply answer: «in high school, I loved basketball and track and field. But I have always been an admirer of strength related activities. That got me competing in regional wheelbarrow contests. I won and discovered that I was gifted with raw strength abilities.
Indeed he was. Coming out of nowhere he stormed Canada' strength community in 1999, qualifying in his rookie year for the Canada Strongest Man competition. The rest is history. He was 6-time Quebec Strongest Man, starting in ear 2000, 5-time Canada's Strongest Man runner-up, 2-time Quebec Strongman Cup winner and 2-time Canada Strongest Man title holder (2205-2006).
His track record is impressive. Over the years, he kept stride with the «Boss», as many have called Hugo Girard, Canada's best strength athlete since Tom McGee, back in the 80's. And along with Hugo Girard, he entered international events. He competed in four World Strongest Man contest (2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006). From Malaysia, to Zambia, to China. In 2006, he made one big comeback to secure 3 rd place at the Russia Grand Prix. All in all, given Hugo Girard's severe injuries over the past three years, Jessen Paulin made big time and became Canada's prominent strongman. Absolutely remarkable considering that Jessen Paulin has limited access to strength event's implements, no sponsors, and that he and his wife Roxanne, his first hand counsellor and number one fan, are working full time. But as puts it: «We are family. Our two children are what we cherish most. This is worth lifting the heaviest stone there is»
When Jessen Paulin will be greeted by his fans at FORTISSIMUS 2008, he will flashback to 1999, as a shy-looking student from Sherbrooke University made his début . Did he then only dare to dream that he would make it all the way to the top? «Run Forrest run!» is Jessen Paulin's favourite film quote. He did just that, making a big name by himself as the dream came true.
