ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, THE LOUIS CYR’S MEMOIRS
It was on Saturday, February 8, 1908, that La Presse newspaper published the first of 44 articles on the life and times of Louis Cyr, the Strongest Man ever. It was an exclusive story as told by the Canadian Samson himself to the newspaper’s representative, Septime Laferrière and illustrator, Albéric Bourgeois, had called it as he saw it : «Louis Cyr is, without any doubt, the strongest man on earth with an unmatched record that will probably stand forever. He deserves such notoriety…»
Time proved that, the editor had made the right decision. The number of copies sold that year reached an unprecedented peak. And, from there on, Louis Cyr became a true folk’s hero and a legend.
The articles are well kept at La Presse’s Documentation Center and at the Louis Cyr’ Archives of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).
